Representative Trade Offices

The third option for business in Qatar is a Representative Trade Office, which is used to promote foreign products to Qatari companies much like a non-trading “shop window;” This designation allows the company to have full ownership. However, if the start up company wants to trade products and services delivered in Qatar, then a legal Qatari partnership is required. Unlike a LLC or Branch Office, there are guidelines on the performance of a Trade Representative Office. Allowable performance is as follows:
  • Contact can be made with a prospective client to familiarize them with the foreign establishment and any representative companies, services, and production for distribution purposes
  • Contact with potential exporters, sellers of materials, and semi-manufactured material suppliers needed by represented authorities and the removal of obstructive barriers for the arrival of materials to the authorities
  • Contact to inform representative authorities about product complaints and to resolve any distribution issues related to product

Illegal, or forbidden, practices of Trade Representative Offices are:

  • Export, import, or sell manufactured commercial samples of goods, with the exception of promotional importation of representative company goods
  • Non representative product or services which are not presented by the representative company
  • Direct contact with consumers
